10 Home Gadgets for Your 2018 Wishlist

September 02, 2017

If you want to know what home and kitchen tech trends will be popular next year, all you have to do is check out the IFA electronics show in Berlin. The massive show is held every September, and it’s the place to find the next best thing.

We just got back from the show, and were really impressed with what we saw. From tiny coffee makers and smart vacuums to fast washing machines and colorful fridges, we got a sneak peek at what gadgets and styles will be popular in 2018.

So whether you’re planning to remodel, or you just like staying on top of the latest trends, check our some of our favorite products we found at IFA 2017.

1. A whole new kind of oven

Miele Dialog Oven

Miele’s new Dialog Oven cooks with radio waves—but don’t assume it’s an ordinary microwave. It also “listens” to the food as it cooks, and adjusts the amplitude, modulation, and phase of the waves accordingly.

We tried it, and the food it cooked was delicious and evenly heated throughout. Plus, you can do cool party tricks like roasting half a cut of beef, but leaving the other as raw steak tartare.

It’s launching in Germany and Austria later this year, and will likely be pretty expensive. No word on when it’s coming to the U.S.

2. A robot vacuum you can tell where NOT to clean

Neato Botvac Connected D7

Got pets? You’ll want the new D7 robot vacuum from Neato. Available later this year, it comes with an app that maps your home, and then lets you program where it should and shouldn’t clean. That means there’s no chance it’ll knock over the dog’s dish—or worse–and scatter food all over the floor.

We’re already impressed by how well Neato’s vacuums clean in our lab tests, so we expect this new model to do well.

3. A microwave that’s also a refrigerator

Frigondas Microwave Freezer

Frigondas, a Spanish-Korean company, developed a microwave that can also “blast chill” foods. In other words, it can rapidly freeze fresh foods to preserve their texture, and chill drinks in minutes. The company expects the product to come to the U.S. soon.

4. Three washing machines in one package

Hisense Triple Washer

Are you really into sorting your laundry? This new Hisense washing machine can do three separate loads at once. Hisense doesn’t sell washers in the U.S., but we already have a few two-in-one washers from Samsung and LG.

5. And, not to be outdone, two dryers in one package

Haier Duo Dry

Already available in other parts of the world, the Haier DuoDry can do two loads of drying at once. That means you don’t have to mix your delicates with your bedding. Samsung already sells a similar machine—the ActiveDry—in the US, and we think it’s better sized for American laundry rooms. But more dryers like this in the future.

6. An extra-fast Samsung washing machine

Samsung QuickDrive

Nobody wants to wait for the laundry to finish. That’s why we love Samsung’s new QuickDrive washer, which promises to wash a load in just 39 minutes without using more water or energy. It does so with an additional rotating “wash plate” at the back of its drum, which agitates clothes more thoroughly in less time.

So far, QuickDrive is only available in Europe—but we wouldn’t be surprised if it came to the U.S. soon.

7. Lawn mowing robots—everywhere!

Robomow robotic lawn mowers

Robots have already conquered our floors. Now, they’re headed outside! A slew of new robot lawn mowers from the likes of RobomowHusqvarna, and Worx aren’t cheap—but they’ll definitely save you time on yard work.

8. The world’s smallest Nespresso machine

Nespresso Essenza Mini

Making espresso at home using Nespresso pods is easy, but the machines were always pretty bulky. The new Essenza Mini changes that. It’s just 4.3 inches wide, 8 inches deep, and 12.8 tall. Plus, new third-party pods are recyclable and even biodegradable.

The Essenza Mini is on sale now at Sur La Table for $110

9. A vacuum for your… windows?

Kärcher window cleaner vacuum

For a streak-free shine, drop the towel and get a combination squeegee and vacuum instead. Already popular in Europe, window vacuums are just starting to catch on in the U.S. With an extension pole, there’s no more excuse for why you don’t do windows.

The Kärcher WV50 window vac is available on Amazon for $28

10. Refrigerators that aren’t just boring boxes

Bosch Vario Refrigerator doors

Already, new finishes like black stainless steel are making refrigerators more attractive. But the Bosch Vario Style line goes one step further: It lets users swap out colorful panels on the fridge and freezer. Feeling like a bold blue one day and a muted gold the next? No problem! They take seconds to swap out.

The fridges are currently only available in Europe, but we wouldn’t be surprised if color-changing finishes become popular in the U.S., too.
